The cover is the best part of this little book The interior illustrations were mostly just simple and easily ignored, though there were a few humorous ones The poems themselves had a slight sense of fun and ridiculousness to them, but nothing overly special or memorable The verses on their own wouldn t be as funny if they were read our of context, meaning if the audience didn t know they were all connected to the idea of a restaurant that serves insects.
Instead of a hodgepodge of different ideas, the children s poems in The Bug House Family Restaurant are all centred on one theme eating insects The poems are playful and often quite cute Most primary school aged kids will be quite delighted with them because they are funny The laissez faire attitude towards punctuation might bug some readers like me and the metre in some poems is awkward Great poetry this is not but sometimes one just reads for fun.
We just watched a video about a movement toward eating insects Farming insects is easy on the planet and they are high in protein. The gross factor is still there. This will be fun to share with my 5th graders Names of Canadian Territories and Provinces included in some of the poems will connect to our social studies
Some of the poems were quite cute, but others were terribly forced Using the first syllable of a word for a rhyme and continuing the word on the next stanza is just terrible The meter was often lacking, making for awkward read aloud.
